In the Ready room with Barry Jenner!
|
|
|
|
The Sci Fi Reporter's Stuart Blair had the chance to catch up with one of Hollywood's busiest actors and Star Trek fan favourite Mr Barry Jenner.
SB: Barry, the life of a professional actor is a tough road to follow, can you tell us a little on how you got started?
BJ: I first got involved with the theatre company at my college. I am forced to admit that I noticed how many pretty girls there we're in the drama department. After one or two productions I discovered that I loved being on stage and found a new outlet for my creative juices. After graduating from West Chester College in the Philadelphia area I boarded a bus for the 100 mile journey to New York City. I supported myself for a while as a cab driver while working with the famous acting teacher Uta Hagen. Eventually I was doing enough commercials to leave the taxi cab business, and shortly afterward I landed a contract on a daytime soap opera "Somerset." Never again did I have to make my living as anything other than a professional actor. I was fortunate enough to do live theatre. At this time there we're many musicals being done, and unfortunately my singing voice sounds like a wounded elk. I did as many plays as I could: I loved being on stage and loved the emotional feedback of a live audience.
SB: How does it feel to be a part of some of television's biggest shows?
BJ: It is amazing to me that I was part of so many of the top rated shows. One of the most rewarding situations was to be one of the cast of Deep Space Nine. In the television business it was an opinion widely held that the producers used only actors of the highest quality, and that to be a part of the DS9 cast was an honor in itself. I have been very fortunate to be part of so many successful shows and that I have had a wonderful career in one of the most difficult fields imaginable.
SB: Can you share with us, some of cast members of TV shows you have enjoyed working with?
BJ: While I was on Another World I met and married Susan Harney who was playing Alice Frame. The marriage didn't last but I guess that is as much interaction as one can imagine. I also have been closer to Marriette Hartley, Ted Danson, Linda Gray and Donna Mills. Also I met my present wife Suzanne Jenner while appearing in a production of the Caine Mutiny court marshall that she was producing. If I get to go to Australia I will bring her with me.
SB: Did you enjoy your role a Admiral Ross on DS9 and we're you happy with the direction of your characters development?
BJ: Admiral Ross was a treat to play. I joined the cast for only one show at first and then the character was brought back again and again. Avery Brooks and I slowly built a strong and trusting bond. He is not an easy person to know closely but I think we worked well together.
I thought it was sensational the way the character became more and more human with each appearance. Good writers and producers take elements that the actor lends to his character and begin to tailor the scripts to accommodate the actor's input. That is what happened on DS9. The back story that I built about Ross's hatred of war land his determination to defeat the Dominion grew and grew. After the final battle there is a scene in which Martok asks Sisko and Ross to drink a blood wine toast to "celebrate" the battle. Both Ross and Sisko pour the wine into the ground and refuse to celebrate such carnage.
SB: What do you like most about your convention appearances?
BJ: Recently in Las Vegas - Nevada, a woman came up to me for a picture and autograph that she was going to hang in her office. She wanted it signed "To Nancy." I did so. Shortly afterward a friend of hers told me that "Nancy" was a justice of The Supreme Court of the State of Nevada and that DS9 took her away from the stress of her demanding job. There are many such amazing encounters.
SB: Can you tell us a little about your voice-over projects?
BJ: My voice-over work is one of my favourite activities now that DS9 has stopped production. The voice-over world is inhabited by some very creative and funny people and most are a pleasure to work with. This is a very competitive field and an actor has to stay sharp and be willing to work at a moments notice. Even if it interferes with his golf game.
SB: Have you worked on any new projects lately Barry?
BJ: I have recently completed one of those annoying infomercials that clutter American television. The product is a pain-relieving electric gizmo that they are trying to get produced. We'll see.
SB:Thanks Barry, do you have a message for your fans in Australia?
BJ: I have never been to Australia, but I have heard many wonderful reports from travellers to your country. To the DS9 fans in Australia I can only say "Thank-you." It is such an honour to know that you have enjoyed our work. As a professional actor I think that I am blessed with the knowledge that what I do has touched so many people in a positive way. I hope that I can get to Australia in the near future. After all, a land that produces Nicole Kidman must be touched with magic.
