October 2006

Gate crazy!

With events happening across our great nation, Stargate and Star Trek fans prepare to celebrate the arrival of some of their show's most popular characters.

The final quarter of 2006 is proving to be the "icing on the cake" of a year that has offered the Sci Fi Fan a varied choice of events to attend in many States around Australia.

Stargate events commence from the last weekend of October through November in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne with each event offering a different convention format.

Sydney kicks off the travelling roadshow on October 28. Adelaide's event will have an exhibition of Martial Arts by the current World Stickfighting Champion as part of it's itinerary and fans there are hoping Rachel Luttrell will pick up her sticks and join in with the Master! Melbourne's event coincides with the Star Trek Art Exhibition now open to visitors at the Victorian College of the Arts giving fans plenty to appreciate during their visit to the Garden State.

Star Trek fans are breathing a sigh of relief as they we're all beginning to think they would be left out of the fun as the rest of the world celebrated the 40th anniversary of the franchise at conventions in major Capital Cities. The announcement of one of Star Trek's biggest names in the modern era - Mr Jonathan Frakes, will see a "gathering" of fans from all over the country for this Sydney only, two day event.

The recent announcement of a dedicated Sci Fi channel on the "pay" TV network - Foxtel, is filtering into the offices of "free to air" TV executives as they too are filling their 2007 schedule's with many new Sci Fi and Fantasy programs. Persistence really does pay off!

Fans that placed their name's on the many petitions over the years, the countless "letters to the Editor" of local newspapers can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Our November issue will feature a special report on the Stargate roadshow and preview the upcoming 40th anniversary Star Trek event. If you are attending any of the events be sure to visit us at the Sci Fi Reporter stand and say hello!

Defend yourself! we are one on one with Rachel Luttrell
    rachel

We are pleased to present an interview with one of the "Fan favorites" of Stargate Atlantis - Ms Rachel Luttrell.

SB: Rachel can you tell us a little about yourself and your acting origins?

RL: I have always been a bit of a ham and I have always had a vivid imagination so you could say that I was an actor of sorts. I started with singing and with dance from a very early age. I think I first felt the undeniable performance bug in grade school when I got to sing a little nursery rhyme of sorts for a massive region wide school concert. I started working in TV when I was in high school back in Toronto. I studied with various teachers and then started doing theatre. I moved to LA after finishing up with Beauty and the Beast in Toronto and have never looked back.

SB: How did you land the role in Stargate Atlantis?

RL: I auditioned. Simple as that. I was put through the ringer though. Many auditions. Until, finally, I won the part.

SB: Are you happy in the direction that your character - Teyla, is going? and are you enjoying the interaction with Jason Mamoa - Ronon Dex, in the show?

RL: I love the interaction with Ronon and Teyla. I think that our writers may have forgotten a bit about Teyla's fighting skills though. Ronon may have usurped some of that spunk...I would like to see a lot more fleshing out of Teyla's story line. I want to see some love interest for her. I would like to see her kicking butt again. I want to look more into her past. She has great potential and there are so many paths that she could lead the audience down. She knows this new galaxy very well and I think there is a great opportunity for her to reveal it's many mysteries to the rest of the team and to the audience. I agreed to bring Teyla to life because of her vast potential.

SB: Can you tell us about the Martial Arts training and just how demanding it is to learn the art of Stick Fighting?

RL: Well, it is quite demanding. I worked my little butt off in the first season to get the fights down. I have worked with some very talented Martial Artists in the industry who happen to live in Vancouver and I have appreciated their tutelage immensely. But I have slacked off a bit this year as I have not been called to do much action. I love being physical though. I think I am at my most happiest when I am not only challenging my mind but my body as well.

SB: Are you currently working on any projects away from Stargate Atlantis and are you able to share them with us?

RL: Well, at the moment there isn't anything to reveal. I know that in the future I will have many other projects to chat about. The season keeps us all very busy. With the exception of Dog's Breakfast (David's film) I haven't really had time to do anything other than Atlantis.

SB: Outside of acting, What do you like to do to relax? Do you have any hobbies?

RL: I love to watch movies, cook, dance, hang out with friends and family, travel, write, squeeze my gorgeous doggy...
I have a guitar sitting in my bedroom just waiting for me to pick it up...that will be my project over Christmas.

SB: Thanks Rachel, Do you have any words for your fans in Australia?

RL: Yes, I am so very excited about making my way to Australia and New Zealand!
I have been told so many wonderful things about both countries and I simply can't wait to see it all for myself. I lookforward to meeting you!
