Sleepless in Seattle
How's your love life?
Have you met someone recently?
If so, I am very happy for you and wish you a
wonderful relationship.
The modern lifestyle
in which we now live, has us experiencing a very
busy lifestyle on all levels and relationships, or
specifically, finding a
person you feel is "right" for you, can be very
challenging and sometimes disappointing if things
don't quite work out the way you had
wished.
You may scour the daily newspaper social scene for
single's events or venture into the night club scene
for
possible success, or you may choose to login to one
of the many Internet based "Match making" agencies
to find a candidate for that "First Contact". You may
join an organization such as a local Sci Fi fan club or
you may be one of the many single's out there that
have tried all of the aforementioned plus more!
For some, searching for possible partner's using these
mediums can result in immediate and lasting success,
but for an enlarging majority, the chances of finding
love and a relationship is becoming very difficult
indeed.
On a recent journey to Melbourne, I attended the
International Animation Festival, I was fortunate to
strike up a conversation with a very delightful woman
in between various film presentations during the
course of the festival, which then saw us spending
most of the day sharing many wonderful
conversations including a very colourful discussion on
the "Dating scene".
The subject of compatibility arose, with Sci Fi being a
major part of a prospective persons makeup in which
this Lady was seeking. That comment made me feel
nice and warm all over as I then proceeded to inform
her that I was reporting on the festival for the Sci Fi
Reporter!
Past experiences shared, revealed a common
stereotype when the subject Sci Fi, and worse, that
you we're actually interested in it, we're
stated.
Is it harder for Sci Fi fans or singles that have an
interest in Sci Fi, to find "the love of their life?"
One suggestion offered to me as a solution,
is an
Internet based dating agency set up similar to the
many agencies that are advertised on late night
television. Sci Fi fans being Internet savvy, would
feel confident in utilizing this type of service to
meet "That very special person".
The two "Trekkies" (Star Trek) fan documentaries,
have revealed dating success that ultimately led to
Marriages through chance meetings at Sci Fi
Conventions.
Have you met your special
person at a
Sci Fi related event?
We would like to hear from
anyone who has a comment or experience they
would like to share on this subject.
Best of luck to everyone seeking romantic bliss -
Stuart

| Our DVD and Featured Book Review |
 |
This Month we look at the Classic Film, Delicatessen
and the much respected, Rose Sisters Trilogy of
Books.
Delicatessen, a post-apocalyptic surrealist
black
comedy that centers around a Landlord of an
apartment building who creates cannibalistic meals
for his unusual tennants.
This Futuristic sci-fi comedy is brought to you by
Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the Director of the classic feel
good movie, Amelie. It is said to be a surrealistic
interpretation of the 1957 classic, The Delicate
Delinquent, starring Jerry Lewis and Darrin
McGavin.
Starring Dominique Pinon, who plays Louison, the
Helper of the Butcher come Landlord named Clapet,
played by Jean-Claude Dreyfus, you will be amazed at
the quality of the production design and
cinematography. It's a little scary though the movie
is a comedy and very funny where it counts.
The Rose Sisters Trilogy
Pure Sci-Fi Romance by Victoria Rose.
Publisher, Outskirts Press.
Three sisters, Christine, Josy and Toni are preparing
to leave their Planet named Gareth as it is being
destroyed. Each agree to travel in one single body-
Christines.
Christine takes the soul-spirits of the other two
sisters into herself and reduces her body physics to
light waves and travels at the speed of light through
space. She arrives in the Rocky Mountains of
Colorado where a fantastic journey begins.
This is a Trilogy of romance with a twist, and where
males, their attitudes on sex and love are..unique.

Movie Buffs! Our special interview with Erin Free |
|
|
|
The Sci Fi Reporter is pleased to present a recent
interview we conducted with Erin Free, the Editor of
FILMINK
Magazine.
SB: Erin, can you tell us a little about
your origins as a writer and your ongoing role as
Editor of FILMINK Magazine?
EF: "I've been writing about film since
my early twenties for various street press
publications, and have been with FILMINK since it's
humble beginnings as a black-and-white, fortnightly
free publication. It's been exciting to be able to
watch it grow from close quarters into something
more substantial and enjoyable for the readers. It's
meant a lot of hard work from everyone here, but
when your hard work involves writing about movies,
it's not exactly hard work is it?"
SB: Do you have a favourite film era? And is
there one particular film you adore?
EF: "I probably lean toward the films of the
seventies, I love the work of Clint Eastwood, Martin
Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Arthur Penn, Brian
De Palma and all the other usual suspects. My
favourite filmmaker is probably Oliver Stone, and
particularly with the films he made in the eighties:
Platoon, Salvador, Wall Street etc. Narrowing my
most adored films to just one is pretty much
impossible, but films like Star Wars, Escape from New
York, Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction, Gimme Shelter, Million
Dollar Baby, On the Waterfront, The Godfather,
Buffalo '66 and Dazed and Confused would all get a
look in."
SB: The Sci Fi and Fantasy genre, in
particular Anime / Manga, is now securing itself as
mainstream entertainment. What direction would you
like to see this genre take in the future?
EF: "The same as with all kinds of films: That
the movies be original, compelling, uncompromising,
strongly performed and made by filmmakers with
vision."
SB: After the disappointment of the last
two Superman movies, Do you think the latest
incarnation will be a winner with the fans?
EF: "I'm yet to see Superman Returns (I'm
actually seeing it tonight), but I think the presence
of Director Bryan Singer and Actors like Kevin Spacey
and Parker Posey almost guarantees that this film will
be a winner. What Bryan Singer did with a difficult
property like X-Men was nothing short of incredible,
and I think he will wield that same kind of magic with
Superman Returns. The trailers look great, and I have
very high hopes for the film."
SB: Do you have a favourite Sci Fi TV show?
What do you like about it?
EF: "My favourite sci-fi TV series is the
original Battlestar Galactica. I mainly like it because
it's a lot like Star Wars, and I've always found Jane
Seymour very alluring. That aside, I think the show
has a great continuing mythology, excellent villains
(go the Cylons!), a very imaginative premise and two
fantastic heroes in Apollo and Starbuck and when I
was a Kid, I wanted my own robot dog!"
SB: With pre production for the eleventh
Star Trek movie set for 2007, who would you like to
see playing the part of a young James T Kirk?
EF: "Matt Dillon would be good...but I don't
think he'd do it. I think Mathew McConaughey would
be good too. He's cool and measured, but he also has
a good sense of humour."
SB: Thanks Erin, we wish you and FILMINK
magazine all the best for the future.
