Be Proud - Be Loud - Be Heard!
Embarrassed about being a Sci Fi fan?
No? Well, I’m glad to hear it!
I’m a Sci Fi fan and there’s nothing I like more than
sharing my passion and my thoughts on the genre we
all love with fellow fans (and those that are not).
Sadly, many of our fellow fans around our great
nation can’t express their passion so freely.
Sci Fi fans are often “soft targets” when it comes to
professing their favourite TV show or publication, all
too often there is ridicule and stigma attached to a
person when they “come out” as an avid Sci Fi fan.
This is often the case when a convention comes to
town and a percentage of fans dress up in their
favourite costumes or tshirts of their favourite TV
show/movie and make their way to the show. More
often than not, taunts from passers-by like “Hey
Geek” or simply laughter as they walk to the
convention venue are sometimes enough to turn fans
away or upset them to the point where they are put
off Sci Fi for good!
I say to all those fans out there that have been
made fun of, laughed at or shunned by their friends -
remind them it’s only in good humour and it’s THEY
who are taking life too seriously. I say: Be proud to
be a Sci Fi fan, Be loud by waving back at those that
taunt you (maybe throw them a Vulcan salute!) and
most of all, be heard by conversing with those that
say Sci Fi is only for Geeks! Maybe quote to them
from the many great minds of our world that take
their inspiration from watching Sci Fi. Maybe the
taunters are already watching Sci Fi and don’t even
know it.
Fan Clubs and Conventions are great meeting places
for Sci Fi fans. It has often been quoted that you
may go to one of these events by yourself but once
you are inside you are never alone.
Just think - thousands attend Sci Fi conventions the
world over and you never hear of any recorded
violence at those events. Though at an Aussie Rules,
soccer or motor sport event (to name a few) there
always seems to be some sort of violence attached
where a crowd has gathered.
We would like to hear from
anyone who has a comment or experience they
would like to share on this subject.
Wishing a safe Easter to all - Stuart

| What did I miss at - Retro Sci Fi Classics Con ? |
 |
|
The Sci Fi Reporter travelled to Melbourne on April 8
2006 to be attend the Retro Sci Fi Classics
Convention at the State Library of Victoria –
Roadshow Theatrette.
The guests appearing were Jane Badler from V, Nick
Tate from Space 1999 and Herb Jefferson Jnr from
the original Battlestar Galactica.
With a great attending audience, fans were treated
to some good old fashioned warmth and genuine
appreciation from the actors whilst they reminisced
about their time on their respective shows.
Jane Badler is as beautiful as she was when her show
ruled the airwaves in the 80’s and the audience was
enthralled by her presence. Jane also spoke of her
latest project “Sex Kittens” which starts in Melbourne
on May 6 at
Dizzy's Jazz Club, and after some
coaxing from the audience they were treated to
some lovely vocals from this very talented lady.
Nick Tate seemed like he was on stage for only
minutes, this gentleman has been around! With
credits as diverse as Dolphin Cove, Star Trek and
Lost, to classic movies like Coolangatta Gold and
Return To The River Kwai, Nick spoke of his time on
Space 1999 and gave us a sample of his voice over
work he does.
Herb Jefferson Jnr (THE Boomer) was a real crowd
favourite, he simply is a BSG fan and it really
showed. He had praise for his fellow cast members
and spoke highly of Lorne Greene, the original Adama.
During the lively auction, a US$5 bottle of Romulan
Ale sold for AUD$145!
Full credit goes to Scott and Lisa Liston from First
Contact Conventions for putting on a show that ran
to time and was very professionally organised along
with the assistance of local sci fi fan club Austrek.

Eggstra Special Interview with Tony Amendola |
|
|
|
The Sci Fi Reporter’s Stuart Blair had the chance to
catch up with one of Stargate SG1's most frequently
recurring characters, none other than Master
Bra'tac himself, Mr Tony Amendola. We hope you
enjoy Part One of our exclusive two-part
interview
SB: Regarding life before Stargate, can you
please tell us of your acting origins and early
achievements?
Tony Amendola: I spent my first 12 years as
a professional exclusively in the theatre, mainly in
classical repertory theatre - Shakespeare, Chekhov,
Miller, Williams etc. I moved to LA around 1990 to
focus more on film and TV. Films: Mask of Zorro,
Blow, Legend of Zorro, Lone Star, and others. TV:
West Wing, Seinfeld, Alias, The Practice, Babylon 5
Crusade, Star Trek Voyager and many more.
SB: Regarding working with Christopher
Judge, there's an obvious mutual respect between
the two characters. Is there an aspect of Master
Bra'tac you would have liked to have seen developed
by the show's writers?
TA: Bra’tac mate - Who is she, where is
she, what did he give up to be who he is? I always
imagined there is one angry Jaffa woman running
around off-world.
SB: What do you enjoy about the
interaction with the fans at your convention
appearances?
TA: Being able to say Thank You and
interact with the folk that have made Stargate SG1
so popular for so long.
SB: Aside from Stargate, are there any
projects you are involved in at the moment?
TA: I'm in the new release "Legend of Zorro"
and also have 2 other films awaiting release “Read
You Like A Book” and “A Perfect Sleep”. Also, I have
a few episodes of SG1 in the can. I just finished a
new play at the Mark Taper Forum in LA called "Lewis
& Clark Reach The Euphrates ". it's a very interesting
play about the current world situation as seen
through our 2 greatest explorers.
SB: On Stargate's longevity, what do you
think is the secret behind its successful run?
TA: Good writing, good production values,
terrific directors and producers, fantastic cast and
luck, luck and more luck.
END OF PART ONE
The Sci Fi Reporter thanks Tony Amendola for his
time and please stay tuned for part two of this
interview coming soon in Australia's Sci Fi E
Newsletter.
