Autumns highway approaches!
Welcome to the
April edition of The Sci Fi Reporter.
Autumn rains are
beginning to fall over our great nation bringing much needed
sustenance for all that dwell in this great southern
land.
Being described as "another world" by visiting
travellers from other countries, I can't help but think.. Yes! it
is, and we are unique to all that make contact with us.
As SF
fans, we stand alone when we attend conventions overseas and I can
testify this first hand on my own journey to "Star Trek Mecca" in
Las Vegas where you are not far away from spotting a familiar face
in the crowd or hearing a distinct accent that is often welcomed
into any conversation just to hear you speak.
It's great to
be an Australian SF fan and we are very fortunate to have such a
wide and varied selection of product to read, see and hear,
available to us in our country.
We are pleased to present an
exclusive interview with Julie Caitlin Brown as well as our new
feature on debating sci-fi.
The convention calendar is
bulging with events to choose from and for all Joss Whedon fans,
July can't come soon enough, as the annual celebration "Can't
stop the Serenity" is now being advertised with cool merchandise
on offer to help support the global charity attached to the
event.
Are you travelling to an event this
month?
We would
like to hear from you.
Have a great month
ahead

| Debating Sci Fi |
 |
This is the first in a series of science fiction
debates that allows you to offer your opinion on different
topics. Essentially, a brief introduction of a topic will be
introduced and then you can discuss it online at... Sci
Fi Reporter on Myspace
A summary of the debate will
then be available in the next issue.
This issues
debate topic... Should science fiction be re-made years
after cancellation or is it better to let them finish on top?
In the past few decades there has been a
recent surge of old science fiction shows being re-incarnated.
Star Trek would have to be one of the most famous shows to do
this. The show made a comeback almost twenty years after the
original series was made. Star Trek then went on to have four
further incarnations. The Next Generation was largely
successful, making more seasons than the original series
however the newest series Enterprise did not fair so well,
making only four seasons before the show was
cancelled.
Doctor Who also has made a massive comeback
in recent years and is amongst other shows that have been
largely popular. However, many of these incarnations are quite
different from the originals. I would say that the new series
of Doctor Who has a completely different style from the
original series. It is a lot darker and more serious than the
previous series especially if you compare it to the Tom Baker
years. If it were not for some of the familiar aspects of the
show that they chose to keep (e.g. the TARDIS, Daleks etc) I
would have never realised it was the same series.
So
the question remains.. Is it a good thing that the old shows
have continued into the future?
TREKSPACE Not just for Star Trek
fans
There is a growing community forming on the
recently launched SF version of Myspace.
TREKSPACE
offers fans their own information site just like that of
Facebook and Myspace with the big advantage being a totally
dedicated community of SF clubs, forums, dating groups and
practically every form of communicating that is available to
date!
The site's inhabitants are not just Star Trek
fans...
Star Wars, Dr Who, Stargate, Serenity, in fact
almost every fan association you can think of is represented
there and is well worth a visit. TREKSPACE

In the dawn of the third age - with Julie Caitlin
Brown |
|
|
|
With a focus on politics and diplomacy intertwined with
the tension of a recent universal war, Babylon 5 was a raw and
gritty story that redefined SF television.
In just five
years the show picked up Hugo and Emmy awards and spawned no
fewer than five feature films for television.
The Sci
Fi Reporter's Maryanne Scutella had the chance to catch up
with one of the show's classy Alien characters, Ms Julie
Caitlin Brown.
SFR: What is your best memory of working on
Babylon 5, and did you have any bad memories whilst on the
show?
Julie: My best memory is how being on
Babylon 5 changed my life, allowing me to travel the world and
even start a new career as a manager of talent for
conventions. You think you are doing one thing, and suddenly,
you realise that it is simply a door that by passing through
it, your world is opened up!
The hardest part of the
show was always the make-up. Had it not been so painful and
demanded so many additional hours of work, I would have
happily stayed on the show for 4 more years. Unfortunately, I
was concerned for my health and my face, and even though the
part was truly wonderful, I just didn't feel safe.
SFR: You have had a diverse career being an
actor, singer, writer and producer. If you could only pick one
of these professions which would it be and why?
JCB: Well, if I HAD to pick one, it would be to
sing. First love and all that. I think singing for me
encompasses so much of all of the professions, by writing
songs, playing the guitar, performing the songs and then
creating the shows to perform in, I hit all the high points!
SFR: What was your impression of the cast of
Star Trek from working on the TNG episode 'Gambit'?
JCB: I had a great time on TNG. I am still in
touch with several of the cast and to work with that caliber
of talent in a two part episode that they were all truly
enjoying, it just doesn't get any better than that!
SFR: Can you tell us a bit about your role as
an actress and producer in Nightingale?
JCB:
Currently Nightingale has been optioned by a production
company that wants to take the film to a grander scale, and I
probably won't be acting in it. I will, however, continue on
as a producer. Don Henry, the writer/director and I, have been
working very closely together on developing the script as well
as other projects and I am very excited to see what level of
talent a larger budget can bring to the project.
SFR: Did you have any particular
inspiration/motivation for writing 'Love First'?
JCB: Absolutely! First, I have always been
seeking more information about who and why we are, since I was
a child, second, it was my travelling all over the world and
meeting so many wonderful people through my work on Babylon 5
and Star Trek which became the basis for the book, Love First.
The second book, Love First and the Artist, which is in the
process of being recorded as an audio book, came out of my 25
years of being a performer, and the newest book, Love First
and Business, from being a business owner for the past 13
years. I want to talk about how to Love yourself FIRST, and
then look for reasons to appreciate the world around you and
those you encounter, as I have found it to be the basis of
good mental health. To KNOW yourself, and to have respect for
the SELF is the only way to live an authentic life and to
engage with others in a healthy way.
SFR: Thanks Julie..Is there a message you would
like to send to your fans?
JCB: I would love to
let those who have enjoyed my work as an artist to know how
much I appreciate their appreciation! And for those of you
that I have had the pleasure to actually meet, how much my
connection with you has blessed my life. I look forward to
creating more art, more life, more love, and to meeting more
of you in the future.
The Sci Fi Reporter wishes
Julie continued success as an actor and agent for the stars.
