It's about choice!
A renaissance is upon us and if you are a Science Fiction fan of print, television and film, you have reason to celebrate.
Hi there and welcome to our July issue.
Australian SF fans are witnessing a changing of the guard as the Demon that is Reality TV, is finally being knocked off it's perch.
Quality SF and Fantasy programs are popping up on all television channels in many varied forms. We have the standards like Dr Who, Stargate, Star Trek, BSG etc... and new shows like the ABC'S - Life on Mars, where time travel via a coma meets tough 70s Manchester cop. If you have not switched on to this program yet, you really are missing a great show.
It wasn't that long ago that the SF and Fantasy section of the local Newsagent contained only a handful of titles toward the back end of the store that were generally pushed behind other genre material. I can't help but have a smile on my face when I walk in to Newsagent or a large Bookstore and view the large allocation of space given to SF publications and books in prominent areas of those stores.
At long last, the SF fan is finally being treated with some respect as our genre continues to expand and gather new fans as they finally discover what Science Fiction has to offer. Remember when your friends would make comments like "Sci Fi, never watch it" or other choice words to describe why they did not give it a go! Well, I have many of those very friends that are now avid readers and viewers of a lot of the shows and publications we have all been appreciating for years.
On the reality TV front, it is still around and will be for a while yet. It's about choice, and now at last we have a lot more to choose from.
Have you discovered a new SF TV show or have a current favourite?
We would like to hear from you.
Have a great month ahead - Stuart

On the Jupiter 2 with Angela Cartwright!
|
|
|
|
Having moved from her birthplace of Cheshire in the United Kingdom, Angela Cartwright arrived with her
family in Los Angeles and at the tender age of three, had made her big screen debut in the film "Somebody up there likes me" as Paul Newman's Daughter.
We are pleased to present our exclusive interview with an Icon of film and television.
Starring as Penny Robinson in Lost in Space and Brigitta Von Trapp in the Sound of Music only touch the surface of a very impressive acting career.
We hope you enjoy our time with Angela Cartwright.
Stuart: Angela, Can you describe how challenging it was to juggle your school studies and home life whilst on the set of Lost in Space?
Angela: It could be challenging at times...to go from Math and History to my hydrophobic garden and monsters. I think because I did my schooling on the set from a very early age I disciplined myself to focus on what I was doing at the time. That discipline helped me to this day.
SB: What was it like having Guy Williams and June Lockhart as your on screen parents, and did it ever feel like the Robinson's were your real family?
AC: I loved Guy Williams. He was such a sweet person. June was so bright and well educated. A wiz at word games like scrabble. I never really felt they were my real parents though. I know I was in a television series and it was pretend.
SB: We have heard about the practical jokes that Bill Mumy and Mark Goddard played on Bob May (the Robot), Do you have a funny moment You would like to share with us?
AC: There were indeed pranks played on the set. Mark was so devilish at times...but it made the day interesting. I have a vivid recollection of Jonathan Harris going up on the catwalk above the set everyday and tossing down tootsy roll pops to the cast and crew. Sometimes Bill and I, when we had finished school and not having work for several hours, would go and explore what was happening on the other sound stages. We got into mischief every once in a while...we were
kids.
Stuart: As teenager growing up with Lost in Space, Dr Smith for me, was this larger than life villain you just loved to hate and at the same time, you simply loved him. It was always a pleasure to see the Robot get one back at Dr Smith on occasion as the "Mechanical Monstrosity" did feel the brunt of "Smith's" insults so often during the series.
SB: How did you find working with Jonathan Harris, and was he as entertaining behind the scenes as he was on screen?
AC: Jonathan was a master story teller. I adored him. He was funny and so professional. With all his dialogue he had to learn every week...he always came to work totally prepared. He was a joy to work with.
SB: You starred in some of the shows biggest episodes like the Golden Man and Princess of Space, Did you enjoy your characters development over the years and do you have a favourite episode?
AC: I would have to say "Mr Nobody" was my favourite episode. I love the way it looks in black and white...and it's a sweet story. Princess of Space was fun...I liked dressing up but the wig was very uncomfortable. There were many more stories that could have been told about Penny. She was a very interesting character to play.
SB: You have two books coming out in 2007, Can you tell us about them and your Photography?
AC: I have been doing photography since I was fifteen. I love the medium and have thousands of photographs to prove it. Over the past ten years I have taken my hand painted photography to another level by exhibiting at galleries. Now I have been incorporating my photographs into altered art and just love it. Art and Photography are two of my biggest passions. Over the past year and a half I have written two books on the subject and they are soon to be released by Quarry
Books. Both books are available for pre order at www.amazon.com .
"In this House - A collection of Altered Art Imagery and Collage Techniques." Will be released in July 2007. It delves into the translation of home from thirteen artists point of view. I co-authored the book with Sarah Fishburn, a well known collage artist. It came out beautifully and I am so excited about it. You don't have to be an altered artist to enjoy the wonderful interpretations of home.
The other book is "Mixed Emulsions - Altered Art Techniques for Photographic Imagery." This book contains hundreds of photographs I have taken and hand painted and embedded in my art with techniques to show how I make my art. It will be available in November 2007.
SB: What do you like most about your convention appearances, and is there a favourite moment you can share with us?
AC: It's always fun to meet the fans of the show. Even though Lost in Space was filmed so many years ago...it has some sort of lasting magic on people and they always comment on how they wanted to be part of the Robinson's family. My favourite convention moment would have to be the first convention we did where the whole cast was reunited in Boston and we had an amazing turnout of some thirty thousand people. That was a special moment with my fellow actors.
Stuart Lost in Space is full of many great moments, it is a show that is viewed by each generation as parents re- live their youth and share it with their children. A wonderful cast was assembled with future stars like Kurt Russell being discovered whilst appearing in the series in guest roles. The Jupiter 2 and the Robot are two of the most recognisable icon's in popular culture along with many of the classic one liners from Dr Smith.
SB: Angela Cartwright, I thank you for your time, and do you have a message for your fans in Australia?
AC: A word to my Australian fans. I was invited to Australia to attend the opening of Twentieth Century Fox Studios several years ago and fell in love with it. I was able to spend almost two weeks there, enjoy beautiful Sydney and experience a little outback. I really look forward to returning someday.
Cheers, Angela
