Sci Fi Reporter E-Newsletter Volume 2 Number 2
May - 2007

It's raining movies!

If you are an avid movie goer you are in your element right now as the current crop of films to choose from is wide and varied with sequels and remakes continuing to dominate the big screen.

Hi there and welcome to our latest issue. It seems like Hollywood has still got repetition on it's mind as it continues to produce more sequels and revive old classics.

Spiderman, Shrek and Pirates of the Caribbean all make their third movie debuts this month with fourth installments already in the planning. Back from the dead comes a new version of Nancy Drew and yet another Die Hard movie!

I must admit I am looking forward to seeing what eighteen years of the Simpsons can produce in the form of a big screen feature and will the Movie see the end of nearly two decades of new episodes?

Do we like repetition? Of course we do!

We like to see our heroes come back from the dead to battle on, we love to see our favourite Starship Crew return from a long journey and a certain archaeologist do what he does best, but at the same time I ask the question, Where are all the fresh ideas? Fresh characters and new story lines?

Is there a young Spielberg or Lucas out there on the horizon that will excite us with something fresh and inspiring? I hope so. What do you think?

We would like to hear from you.

Have a great month ahead - Stuart

We're at Stargate Command with Don S Davis
don

The Sci Fi Reporter's Stuart Blair had the chance to catch up with one of Stargate SG1's longest serving cast members - Mr Don S Davis.
We hope you enjoy our exclusive interview.

Stuart: Don, Can you tell us about your military career and did you draw upon past experiences whilst serving in the U.S. Army to create your character - General Hammond, in Stargate SG1?

Don: I completed ROTC training while working on my B.S. Degree program, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduating from Southwest Missouri State College in 1965. I served on active duty for three years and had attained the rank of Captain by the time I had completed my service commitment. I based Hammond character and attitudes on those officers I had served under during my tenure on active duty.

SB: Many Australians were first introduced to you via the John West TV commercial you appeared in. Can you tell us about your acting origins?

DD: I majored in theatre and art while working toward my B.S. Degree. Upon leaving the Army I earned a M.S. Degree in theatre from Southern Illinois University. After teaching for a number of years I returned to Southern Illinois University and completed a PhD in theatre. I started acting in film and television while teaching in the theatre department at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver B.C. Canada, in the early 1980's.

SB: You have had many diverse roles in your career, Is there a particular role you have always wanted to play?

DD: I have always particularly enjoyed comic roles, though most of my film and television roles have been as dramatic characters. My favourite role to date has been a character named Donald P Carstairs - a tough, slovenly and often inept Private Detective - in a series called Slick Air.

SB: Did you enjoy the direction of your characters development in Stargate SG1?

DD: Very much. The Stargate writers and producers let me play him pretty much as I saw him.

SB: How did you enjoy your time on the X- Files and what was it like working with Gillian Anderson?

DD: Gillian Anderson was absolutely wonderful in every way. She is an amazingly genuine, beautiful, talented, creative kind and giving person.

SB: You are an accomplished Painter and Sculptor, Did your art work help you focus on your acting or did you use it to relax after a long season at the studio?

DD: The art work keeps me sane in an often stressful and seemingly insane world.

SB: Thank you Don, Is there a message you would like to send to your fans in Australia?

DD: Just that Ruby and I love Australia and are really looking forward to being there in April and May.
