It's the silly season!
"If it's April it must be convention season"
No less than six events around our great nation officially kick off the Australian convention season and SF fans are amassing like firefly's on the fourth of July, (sorry Scotty!) as they make their way to events in most states.
Star Trek, Stargate and Manga to name a few of the genre being celebrated in April. The upcoming appearance of Star Trek Deep Space Nine Captain - Benjamin Sisko, AKA Mr Avery Brooks, has fans in a frenzy as it has been a long time between drinks since a Captain has visited Australia.
Mr Don Davis makes his return down under and brings another SG1 fan favourite, Mr Carmen Argenziano with him as they make their way up the east coast.
A question posed to us regularly by our readers is "When are we going to see new Dr who cast members live on the convention scene?"
With the show rating so well amongst the masses we are asking the same question ourselves!
Rumours are rife at the moment on the SF movie front, the latest one being the Steven Spielberg remake of Tintin. To be animated or not, that is the question being asked by the millions of Tintin fans around the world as this film will be put under the microscope with the same intensity as the upcoming Star Trek and Stargate films.
Will the inclusion of current A list actors being touted for roles in some of the SF films that are about to begin production, guarantee the success of the films with it's fans or will we witness the sad trend of Hollywood simply relying on effective marketing and big corporate sponsorship to turn out more mediocre films?
Have you seen a quality SF film recently?
We would like to hear from you.
Have a great month ahead-Stuart

In the Celestial Temple with Avery Brooks
|
|
|
|
On the eve of his tour of the Pacific, we present an interview with one of the "Big Five" in the Star Trek franchise - Mr Avery Brooks.
Stuart: Avery you served as the Artistic Director of the National Black Arts Festival from 1993 - 96. Can you tell us about the Festival?
Avery: The real question..How can I serve the people?...How can I serve the culture? It was both honour, blessing, and the curse of having to raise money to support a notion that considered the presence of African people in the world, important.
SB: One of Star Trek Deep Space Nine's most influential episodes is "Far beyond the Stars." Set in a very dark era for White America, Did you find it a challenge playing the character of Benny Russell?
AB: Not at all...I am Benny Russell.
SB: Are you a Baseball fan?
AB: Yes
SB: Can you tell us about your relationship with Cirroc Lofton?
AB: I love Cirroc Lofton as I love my sons and all of my children. From the first moments he is for me as my children. I dare say they feel the same as I do.
SB: In the DS9 episode "Budda Bing, Budda Bang," fans had the chance to view your musical talents. Can you tell us what it was like working with James Darren?
AB: James Darren is hip...everybody knows that...I can sing...everybody doesn't know that ...I sing everyday.
SB:What do you like most about your convention appearances?
AB: The contact with...the connection...the touch of the people...who complete the thought of me in this context.
SB: Do you have any favourite past times away from acting?
AB: Music....period
SB: Thank you very much Avery, do you have a message for your fans around Australia?
AB: ...In the disparate way in which we sometimes look or engage each other...I am grateful that there is an original way for us to look at each other as the same...thankyou.
Find out where you can meet Avery Brooks this April.
