Sci Fi Reporter E-Newsletter 11th Edition
New Year 2007

Happy New Year!

2007 - Here we go!

"Are you all set for another exciting year?"
I hope so, as there is news aplenty on many activities happening around our great nation in 2007.

Over the break we we're contacted by many fans that attended the Sydney Star Trek convention featuring the appearance of Mr Jonathan Frakes and we hope you enjoy our featured transcript of the convention.
The Sci Fi Reporter was there to cover the event and we hope you enjoy our view of the show.

Star Trek fans had reason to celebrate in 2006 with the surprise appearance of Ms Jolene Blalock "Tpol" ST Ent and Mr Jonathan Frakes "Riker" ST TNG and if that isn't enough there is the upcoming appearance of one of the "Big Five" as Mr Avery Brooks "Captain Sisko" ST DS9 makes his way Downunder to Adelaide for a convention in April.

The word from the fans is they are simply delighted that the calibre of actor being "brought to town" is "pure quality." Stargate and Buffy fans look set for a few events as there are some main cast actors flying in and Superhero fans are already enjoying an early attraction at the Art exhibition in Melbourne featuring some of there favourite "Men and Women in tights!"

We kick off 2007 with our very own Convention calendar for the first quarter of the year as well as list for you, a few recommended Aust SF Forums and SF Newsletters for you to browse through and of course, we have a full list of quality Fan Organisations offering many diverse activities you can participate in.

We are counting down to our 1st Birthday issue in February and we have a very special issue for you.
We welcome your comments and Birthday messages and we may just have a prize for the best message sent to us!

We would like to hear from you.

Have a great month ahead-Stuart

On the bridge with Number One!
frakes

The Sci Fi Reporter's Stuart Blair recently attended the Star Trek 40th anniversary convention in Sydney featuring the special guest appearance of one of the shows Icons - Mr Jonathan Frakes.
We are pleased to present this exclusive transcript of the event.

The Avillion Hotel in the heart of downtown Sydney was the venue for Australia's official celebration of the 40th anniversary of Star Trek.
Fans that attended the two day event, had travelled in from around the Country to be apart of this very unique show and we're entertained throughout the weekend with various Fan Film screenings, Memorabilia Auctions, Dealer room browsing but most of all the fans had attended for one reason - To meet Number One!

The audience had the pleasure of a guest appearance by Farscape fan favourite Ms Gigi Edgley.
From her energetic entry to the stage, Gigi had the Audience in a trance as this beautiful woman let flow with story after story of her time on Farscape and it was pure entertainment and appreciated by everyone as question after question was posed to Gigi on all aspects of her life.
Gigi Edgley's popularity was openly displayed by the line up for her autograph as well as having a photograph taken with her.

Jonathan Frakes entered the room to a thunderous applause. A very tall man Jonathan had a commanding aura around him and he projected a warm, friendly and approachable atmosphere and he went straight into answering questions from the audience.
Jonathan spoke of his website and the dedication of his Webmaster and in the same breath, the disappointment of the website shutting down due to an imposter answering questions from fans via the website, with incorrect information being replied.

Patrick Stewart (Picard) impersonations we're the order of the day and Jonathan had them down to a fine art! He demonstrated the "Riker walk" and commented on one of the most obscure questions asked of him at a convention being..
"Why does Riker walk that way, does he have haemorrhoid's or something?" much to the delight of the audience Jonathan continued to walk across the stage head down and tilted, body leaning forward and "full steam ahead!"

So who is sexier? William or Thomas? referring of course to Jonathan's Character's from Star Trek The Next Generation, well ask Marina Sirtis as Jonathan had stated to the audience, a comment Marina had made to him stating Thomas was "Cuter than William!"
Jonathan had nothing but admiration for his onscreen wife and made mention that Marina Sirtis is under used in her field, much to the agreement of the audience. One of his favourite onscreen moments was the famous"Tequila scene" from Star Trek First Contact featuring Marina and James Cromwell.

"Jonathan, is there a role you have always wanted to play?JF "I have always wanted to play the role of Sky Masterson from the production of "Guy's and Dolls." Jonathan immediately brakes into a chorus of "Luck be a Lady," a number from the show and has the audience applauding.

Jonathan Frakes simply charmed the audience during his time on stage and one could see with out a doubt this man was a fan, his enthusiasm and support for his show went way beyond that of an actor simply playing a part and this will be remembered by everyone that attended the show.

Asked about the current health of "the franchise," Jonathan spoke of the high standard of "Fan Films" being produced in particular the latest production by Star Trek Voyager actor and now Director - Mr Tim Russ "Of Gods and Men."
Jonathan mentioned a project of his own "under construction" in "Masters of Science Fiction." A project fans are now eagerly awaiting to view.

The Sydney Star Trek convention gave a boutique audience the rare opportunity to appreciate one of the biggest names in Star Trek of the modern era and we we're delighted to be a part of it.
